Icelandair Announces Service to Chicago, Illinois

Icelandair today announces further expansion of their global network with a new year-round service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Flights will begin in March of next year with four weekly round-trips from Iceland on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with connections from more than 20 destinations in Europe including 5 airports in the UK.

Icelandair, in operation since 1937, has a long, illustrious history of providing flights from Europe to United States, including a 15-year stint to Chicago that began in 1973. Since then, Icelandair has continued to grow as an airline with new aircraft, modern amenities and more destinations. With the announcement of Chicago O’Hare International, Icelandair will now offer services to 15 North American gateways with connections from 5 UK airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow airports.

"We are excited to return to the Windy City as a bigger, better airline that can best serve the dynamic market of Chicago and its nearly 10 million inhabitants. Chicagoans will now have a refreshing alternative when traveling to Iceland and beyond, and Icelanders and Europeans will have access to the vibrant and historic city of Chicago. This is an exciting and significant moment for Icelandair and we look forward to welcoming Chicago aboard," said Birkir Holm Gudnason, CEO of Icelandair.

Icelandair has been the main catalyst in bridging Europe and North America through Iceland, helping boost tourism to their home country in record numbers and making it one of Europe’s hottest destinations. Icelandair flights to Chicago will offer more options when traveling to the Midwest

Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel said “Chicago is a diverse and thriving city with a desire to explore the world and other cultures. Icelandair will open the door to opportunities for Chicagoans and we embrace their return. We look forward to the trade and tourism they will facilitate for both Chicago and Europe through the beautiful country of Iceland.”
